Chester County Historical Society

Library intern

West Chester, PA

Contact: Diane Rofini, 610-692-4800 x226, drofini@chestercohistorical.org

Tasks to be completed:
Interns may process a small collection and write a guide to that collection. Processing a collection involves many aspects of research and analysis by the student; they will be working with primary source material. Students will have to figure out how the documents relate to each other and what story they tell. They will end up using many of our resources to do this. Collections often can be chosen based upon the historical time period or a particular interest of the students.

Skills required:
Attention to detail is a must! History majors and those who are thinking about archives/library careers preferred.

Skills developed/products produced:
Beside the library/archive overall experience, the collection guide will eventually get put on the Historical Society website, thus the intern will have a “publication” to list on his/her resume

Timing:
Tuesday through Friday during the day is the best time, though there may be some flexibility after the internship commences.

Placement Services and Recruitment Firms

This page links to placement services, recruitment firms, and employment agencies that specialize in library, information services, and/or records management positions.  Many of these organizations accept resumes and list current job openings. Some require you to register for their services.  Some of the positions may be permanent, others temporary. Some specialize in executive (director/dean-level) searches. Consult the policies of each organization or agency for specifics.  All of these sites are cross-listed in other appropriate categories (by specialty or region) on Library Job Postings.  See also SLA's page for placement and executive searches for more examples, including some that don't have websites.

Library Fellow

Library Fellow, Philadelphia
Library Build is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, PA, dedicated to renovating, and re-staffing public school libraries in our city.
Library Build is currently partnered with 2 schools in North Philadelphia, and we will be celebrating the grand opening of one library at Rowen Elementary School in August 2012.

For more information about Library Build, visit our website www.librarybuild.org, friend us on facebook, twitter: twitter.com/LibraryBuild, and check out our blog www.librarybuild.blogspot.com

About the Fellowship
The Fellowship is meant to support the newly opened library at Rowen School. The Fellows, either working full-time, part-time, or in shifts throughout the 2012-2013 School Year can expect to:

- Organize and maintain the library
- Keep track of class visits and books checked out
- Lead class visits and learning classes in the library
- Work with teachers to support class-room projects
- Create and run book clubs for students after school
- Monitor students during lunch hour in the library

The Fellow will be supported by Library Build's staff, and by a Free Library librarian who will advise and mentor the Fellow. The Free Library mentor will help the Fellow to institute and create programs, and how to maintain and run the library itself.

Although the Fellow(s) will be working through Library Build, they can expect to be a part of the Rowen School community, and will need to engage with the principal and teachers to ensure that students are learning to the best of their abilities.

Duration of Fellowship

Ideally, we are looking for a Fellow who can dedicate 8 months to the fellowship - or the entire duration of the 2012-2013 school year.
We can discuss times and shifts if necessary.

Qualifications
We are looking for a graduate student in library science, or literacy, or a recent graduate in these areas.
However, we would be happy to see applications from mature seniors in college who believe that they have the background and the skills to be a great Library Fellow.
